(The Center Square) – Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp declared an emergency on Thursday as the state braces for what is now Hurricane Isaias.
The storm is expected to arrive on the Gulf Coast on Friday evening. It is currently categorized as a Category 1 hurricane, but could be a Category 2 before it reaches landfall, according to the National Weather Service.
“All parts of the state could see impacts from this storm, and we have the resources ready to assist them if that is the case,” said Josh Lamb, director of the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency.
The impact on Georgia could last through Saturday, according to the governor’s office.
Kemp said he is hoping for the best but preparing for the worst.
“I encourage all Georgians to take this storm seriously and prepare now by stocking up on food, batteries, flashlights, water, and other necessities in case of severe weather impacting communities Friday night through Saturday,” Kemp said in a statement.
Hurricane Helene swept through Georgia two years ago, causing $5.5 billion in damage.
